Henry and his friends are talking about waste sorting.

  • H: Last night, I saw a new advertisement on TV which described waste sorting.
  • M: Yeah, I saw it too. It said different kinds of rubbish must be put into different colored trash bins.
  • J: Sounds good. The idea has been put forward for many years and now it is being put into practice.
  • L: Yes. People are producing waste every day. It is really a huge burden on our natural habitat. So sorting is necessary.
  • H: Yeah, some waste is not biodegradable and will last forever, like plastic, batteries and so on.
  • M: Experts say the pollution caused by waste batteries is so serious that the contaminated soil will never recover. And it may result in many diseases like cancer.
  • L: Oh, that is so terrible! However, some waste can be recycled and reused, like paper. So we should collect used paper to make new paper.
  • J: My roommates all recycle, and we have certain places for collecting different types of waste like plastic and paper. Waste sorting is necessary for separating reusable waste from the rest.
  • H: Yes, the earth is limited in natural resources, and many products are made from finite resources, which cannot be generated by nature in a short period of time. Simply dumping these kinds of products is wasting resources. Like many heavy metals, they are very rare and we shouldn't throw them away.
  • L: I agree with you. Some part of most waste is of value. To reuse and recycle is to save resources to a large extent and to protect the environment.
  • M: I totally agree with you two. Sorting waste is a meaningful activity. If everyone recycles even just a bit, it can make a positive impact on the environment.
  • J: Yeah, I have heard that the Japanese divide their lunch-boxes into different parts before they throw them away.
  • H: Actually, we can do many things no matter how small. In our school, at the first floor of every department, there is a dustbin for collecting used batteries. If everyone uses it, we are making an important contribution to the environment.
  • M: Yeah, we should do that. And we also could tell our friends and relatives how important waste sorting is and encourage them to do something.
  • L: Good idea! Let's take action immediately!
